Revolutionizing Transit: A Green Vision for Strumica

by Nov 19, 2024blog

Green transportation is any means of travel that doesn’t negatively impact the environment. Green transportation can be private (like a fast ebike), or public transit (like an electric city bus). Walking is also considered a green mode of travel.

Modern electric and hybrid buses, light rail systems, and subways are becoming more prevalent and are crucial for reducing congestion and pollution in urban areas.

Green or eco-friendly transport doesn’t rely on using up natural resources such as fossil fuels, but uses renewable energy sources instead. They’re focused on using resources efficiently, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality.

Strumica in North Macedonia is going to be the first Balkan city with fully electric public bus transport in line with the European Green Deal.

Experts argue that electric buses could make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions but for them to make a real, lasting impact and deliver the most benefits – the energy they use needs to come from renewable sources. Only then could we consider them as a zero-emission transportation option.

The transport of citizens around the city and in the settlements of the Municipality of Strumica will be organized with new electric buses, while the price of the train ticket should be around 30 Macedonian denars (or 0,5 EUR). According to the public company “Strumica Transport”, the transport was created to facilitate the life and movement of the residents of Strumica, but also to reduce the emission of harmful gases.

The public municipal enterprise “Transport Strumica” is already announcing the tenders and plans to complete the entire preparatory process by the beginning of autumn, while in the next heating season, transport around the city will rely on the city’s electric buses.

10 electric buses, procured on leasing, will be put into traffic, for which the municipality will pay seven million euros.

The buses are Isuzu Novociti Volt models, emission-free vehicles that can transport up to 48 passengers, powered by a 270 kW TM4 electric motor with an 8-year warranty lithium-ion battery, the Strumica municipality said in a social media post.
