International Day of Forests

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests (IDF) in 2012. The Day celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of all types of forests. On each International Day of Forests, countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns. The theme for each International Day of Forests is chosen by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests.

Forests are crucial for our daily lives, providing the air we breathe, the homes we live in, and even the medicine we rely on. However, rapid industrialization and overpopulation have led to widespread deforestation, contributing to global warming and resource depletion. As we mark World Forestry Day on March 21, it’s vital to remember the significance of forests and the urgent need to protect them.
World Forestry Day is celebrated annually on March 21, falling on a Thursday this year.

The theme is ‘Forests and innovation: New solutions for a better world’, highlights the importance of forests in fostering innovation and addressing global challenges. Celebrating World Forestry Day involves planting trees, educating others about the importance of forests, and promoting afforestation efforts.

Afforestation care is shared and generally responsible

Together with many socially responsible companies and civic organizations in our country, efforts are being made to increase afforestation on the territory of Macedonia. In the course of 2023 and 2024, 1,200,000 saplings, of various species, will be planted, for which consent was given by the Faculty of Forestry and the experts in the Public Enterprise National Forests.

Tree species of ash, white pine, maple, acacia, oak, cypress, chestnut will be planted on more than 400 hectares of land throughout Macedonia.

All planting material is provided by the Public Enterprise National Forests from the nurseries in Sveti Nikole and Kumanovo, which are modernized and produce container-type seedlings, which are much more resistant to climate changes than ordinary seedlings.

The action is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, the Ministry of the Environment, as well as numerous companies and civil society organizations, schools etc.
