Electric scooters have gained immense popularity in recent years as a mode of transportation, especially in urban areas. As people become more conscious of their environmental impact, they are increasingly turning to electric scooters as a way to reduce their carbon footprint.
Macedonia also follows the trend of the popularity of electric scooters. Although they are used by everyone, from students to adults, this is especially the case among young people. Aleksej is a first-year student at the “Gjorgi Dimitrov” gymnasium in Skopje. He has recently started to use an electric scooter as a means of transportation, and he is very excited about it. ‘’I love that they are electric and eco-friendly and a much better option rather than cars or buses”, says Aleksej. As every day we see a rise in popularity in the usage of these convenient eco-friendly scooters, for that а huge role play the “BinBin” electric scooters.
The company BinBin recently made available 500 electric scooters that can be rented, wanting to show that they are a great example of how these vehicles can help the environment. Aleksej also agrees with that: “I’m very happy that Binbin scooters exist’’, Aleksej adds. We wanted to see just how much people used the BinBin scooters, so we did a survey in our school Gjorgi Dimitrov. Out of the 160 students that we asked, 15% of them frequently use the Binbin scooters. This may not look like much, but this is just the beginning, as more and more students begin to like these scooters.
One of the most significant advantages of electric scooters is that they produce much lower emissions compared to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. By using electricity to power the motor, electric scooters do not emit harmful gases that contribute to air pollution and climate change.
According to a study by the European Environment Agency, electric scooters produce on average 85% less CO2 emissions than petrol-powered motorcycles. This reduction in emissions has a profound impact on the environment, especially in areas where air pollution is a major concern. These major advantages are contributing to the rise in popularity of electric scooters.
But, besides the advantages, there are also disadvantages of using electric scooters. They can pose safety risks, particularly when sharing roads or sidewalks with other vehicles and pedestrians. Accidents can occur due to a lack of protective features and riders not following traffic rules. The problems with the increased use of electric scooters in Skopje are pointed out by a group of enthusiasts in order to make cycling work better in the capital of Macedonia.
The group called “Na Tochak” (On Wheels) says that after the launch of the Turkish company Bin Bin’s electric scooter rental service, this private company is allowed to use all public areas for the scooters in Skopje. According to them, this is in conflict with traffic safety. The advantages of electric scooters such as lower emissions, energy efficiency and convenience make them a compelling choice for urban commuters. They are a valuable addition to sustainable transportation options and could play a crucial role in improving the environment, but it is also important to be aware of the disadvantages and dangers of their use.
