„Be a part of the revolution against the air pollution; let’s make a revolution and a human contribution for a better nature solution“.
Air pollution has major impact over health issues in most parts of our country. These health issues refer not only to people but to animals and plants too.
In North Macedonia, the citizens of Skopje, Veles, Tetovo, Bitola breathe the worst quality air which affects more than about 30% of our population. There are over 20 monitoring stations for air quality measurement and according to these, the main sources of pollution are industrial facilities that pollute with gases containing: sulphur, carbon, nitrogen and heavy metals. Most factories don’t take into account the problem with air pollution and as a consequence they don’t invest in technology to ease the problem.
Residents burning unclean fuels to heat their homes, vehicle emissions, and industrial emissions are also believed to be big causes of smog.
In the past few years we witness the rise of air pollution levels to 28 times the safety threshold established by the World Health Organization. Winter period is the time when people suffer the most from air pollution.
Like many other developed countries North Macedonia has imposed emergency measures in its capital Skopje and three other cities to tackle soaring levels of smog.

Outdoors sport’s events have been cancelled and construction work limited to just six hours each day.
The government is also recommending companies relieve pregnant women and people over the age of 60 from work.
But the government isn’t the only one to fight against the air pollution. Everybody should contribute with its own single steps. Taking public transportation instead of driving cars, or riding a bike instead of traveling in carbon dioxide-emitting vehicles are only a few ways to reduce air pollution. Avoiding aerosol cans, recycling yard trimmings instead of burning them, and not smoking cigarettes are other measures too.
