Food waste in Italy

A third of the food produced in the world is wasted, and in Italy alone this loss is worth as much as 9 billion euros a year.

The European Union has come up with a precise definition of what constitutes food waste. EU Directive 2018/851 states that the concept of “food waste” also includes inedible parts of food. Food, therefore, also includes inedible parts that have not been separated from edible parts during production, such as bones attached to meat.

Every year 8.65 million tons of food are wasted in Italy. Worse than Italy in Europe are only Germany (10.9) and France (9). On a pro capita level, each Italian throws away 146 kilograms, 15 more than the European average, with 73 percent of waste occurring at home.

In fact, Goal 12.3 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda indicates to halve global per capita food waste at the retail and consumer level by 2030 and reduce food losses during production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses (UN, 2015).
